body piercing vs. professionalism??

  1. I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions on nurses or other professionals having body piercings. By piercings, I am referring to things like eyebrow, nose, lip, or tongue piercings. Those visible to others.

I just got my hair colored a few days ago, and it is somewhat outside the "norm." Nothing totally freaky, just blonde with platinum highlights and brassy/violet red highlights. My boss saw this and said, "I like it, but just don't go and get your nose or your tongue pierced."

I thought she was joking at first, but when I asked her about it, she told me that it was against policy to have "those kinds of piercings."

I was a little upset by this, as I had really intended to get my tongue pierced very soon. I honestly cannot remember reading in our policy anything mentioned about piercings.

I can see where image is concerned, but as someone stated in another thread, I am not just a nurse. I had decided to bring out my individuality and "quirkiness".

    Any thoughts??

Funny you should bring this up, because it came up today as a matter of hospital policy (where I do my clinicals). It isn't so much the "look" but the infection thing when it comes to the piercings (yeah right).

Don't even start on the ears being peirced, because management isn't thinking when they say that nose, tongue, eyebrow etc. is a hazard. Apparently when they decided this week those "other" piercings weren't sanitary they "forgot" the ears.

And, as a reminder, we can't have nails over 1/4 inch or false nails (which they go into detail on).

So, basically, I think that it is a "professional" look thing rather than anything else. The way I look at it is this: if I choose my battles carefully, I can get away with much more practical things than whether or not I choose to wear my (insert piercing here) to work.

My tongue is pierced. At my hospital, there are a lot of arbitrary rules/regs... i.e. no facial piercings, no visible tattoos, no excessive jewelry.

Guess what? I couldn't tell ya how many dudes walk around with sleeve tattoos. And nobody has commented on my tongue piercing. I wear a pink glittery barbell, which sort of blends in with the oral mucosa and isn't noticeable at all.

I have four tattoos and a couple of body piercings (none of which are visible with regular clothing on), but our hospital also has a policy against "visible" piercings........I'm not sure how a tounge ring is really considered "visible".........

Good luck on your piercing quest, Shandy!

I've thought about doing it anyway, but i have had it done before, and I remember how it took atleast a week for me to even be able to talk right. Unfortunately, I think THAT would get it noticed. I really don't think tongue piercings are noticible at all unless someone is yawning or singing or something like that.

Oh well... now I have to think of something else to do to bring out my personality. Any ideas???

I had a lisp for about 2 days (during which time I ate A LOT of mashed potatoes). Funny, nobody at work noticed it (except the girls I went to get pierced with).

I'd love to see peek-chures of your hair.

I'd post some if my webcam was any good. The lighting in my bedroom is terrible though, and when I turned the cam on to take a pic, the highlights weren't even noticable. Plus, if I took a pic with my cam in the bedroom, you all would see what a pig sty I live in!!!

I have no body piercings...just tattoos. But where I work there are people with tongue piercings and we even have one young man with multiple ear piercings. And I don't believe they have said anything to him.

    LOL!

You should see my office. What a wreck! Dogs lying everywhere... currently there is a territorial dispute because Jessie (big dog in avatar) wants Mercedes' (beagle) snausage. Mercedes doesn't want to eat it, but she doesn't want Jessie to have it, either.

So Jessie makes a move for it, Mercedes growls and bays at her.

And the cycle repeats. Ad nauseum.

poor mercedes'!!! Give the poor girl a snausage!!!

Noone has given me any ideas for other "personality" expressions I can do! Someone please help!

What aspect of your personality are you trying to express?

You could go to work nekkid.

And Jessie had her own snausage. Its not Mercy's fault she gobbled it up, and now she wants the one that I gave to Mercedes. She's just greedy.

LOL!!! I don't think ANYONE would appreciate me going to work in the buff.

I guess I am just tired of being plane jane. I want to show my spunky, quirky side. The part of me that is anything but normal. I am a single mom, a nurse, and pretty much a goody-two-shoes a lot of the time. I want to let my hair down a little! (without doing something I'll regret in the morning, lol)
