Bingeing on Celebrity Weight Battles

  1. When Kirstie Alley recently stepped onto the scale for the first time in 15 months, she screamed. "I am so much more disgusting than I thought!" When Oprah Winfrey realized she was the "dreaded 2-0-0," she wrote in the January issue of her magazine: "I'm mad at myself. I'm embarrassed."

In the last year, so many celebrities have shared their body battles with us: Carnie Wilson. Kathy Ireland. Valerie Bertinelli. Marie Osmond. Melissa Joan Hart. Up, down. Up, down.

Losing weight is TV entertainment, from "The Biggest Loser" to "Bulging Brides" If you can judge celebrities and TV contestants, does that give you license to judge the woman on the street?

"I can't believe this is still getting to me," said Sarah Morice, 31, a doctoral candidate in theology at Notre Dame. "I see what Kirstie Alley says about herself and how easy it is for that to become my script. It's easy to lapse into 'Oh, my body's ugly,' and 'What's the use? The yo-yo dieting and disparaging comments prompt some women to feel unmotivated and hopeless.

Personally, I couldn't care less about celebrities' weight battles. They have access to all sorts of help that the rest of us can only dream about, e.g. personal chefs, trainers, surgeries, the best medical care and so on...........and if they can't manage themselves with all of that going for them, I don't think anyone ought to look down their noses at us ordinary mortals if we have a few issues.

I don't follow celebs' battles with anything much, as I have enough battles of my own to deal with. However, if I ran the world, folding laundry and changing diapers would burn as many calories as running six miles.

So would running up and down the hall to check 10 blood sugars and giving at least 12 insulin shots within a 20 minute time frame!

I have a friend who doesn't see the irony of driving a mile to the gym to run 2 miles on the treadmill. :spin:

My bf and I used to laugh when we went at all the people fighting over the parking spaces close to the door.

As for celebrity lifestyle issues, I'm pretty much out of the loop.
