1. Just curious, ya all. I have taken bellydancing for 4 years now and love it. Does anyone out there also take lessons? I take from a private instructor. It is great exercise and very feminine. I have not performed in public, although my instructor thinks I am good enough.

Don't worry Susy K, you wouldn't know if I am a man or woman by my posts! No, I am quite the "girlie" girl!

Sure they can and many do! It is really beautiful to see men do the movements and the dance.! It's interesting, though, that bellydancing was origionally done for women in labor by women.

It is much fun and VERY good exercise! You learn to isolate each body part and move it independently and incorporate the movements into the dance. People think it is random movements, but it is not. There are recognizable steps and movements during each part of the 5 part dance. I have a sword I balance on my head as I bend backwards, and a veil that I use in some parts of the dance. And of course, the beautiful swirly skirt. I don't think anything is more feminine.!!

AHA! I knew someone was a bellydancer here! Just couldn't remember who had posted that.

I had really wanted to take a class that was being offered this spring, but could bear the fright! So I've been using the Veena & Neena videos Dang! The cardio one is a serious workout. I'd like to take the next class now that I'm getting a little practice at it Where did you find your private instructor?

I used to take from Habeeba in Columbus Ohio in 1971 when I was in college. I took 2 years then. That;s when the art form was getting popular in the USA. I had the fortune to meet my instructor 4 years ago when her Bellydancing lessons were advertised in Cincinnati. She had also taken from Habeeba. She is 46 and I am 51, so anyone can dance, no matter how old or what ever your body type is. I would start by looking in your phone book under "dance" . Most instructors will advertise, or you could go under Bellydance instructors on the web.

Interesting Katscan! It's really beautiful to watch, at the end of one of the videos the girls each dance...I've noticed a lot of current dance moves that are taken from it
