U.K. lord links gay marriage, obesity crisis
    by Ben Townley

Lord Tebbit, an influential conservative leader in England, continued his tirade against gay men on Thursday by claiming the country's current "obesity epidemic" can be blamed on the government's support for "buggery."

The comments came during BBC Radio 4's "Today" program, where the former cabinet minister was invited to talk about the ongoing problems of obesity across the United Kingdom.

Asked what the root causes of the problems were, Tebbit, who was made a peer in 1992, drew a tenuous link between the issue and same-sex relationships.

"The root cause of this problem, like a number of others, is the breakdown in family life," he said, arguing that families "don't so often eat together" and that "wives are virtually pressurized into feeling they ought to go to work instead of looking after their children."

He said this decline in family life was due to the current government, which he accused of doing "everything it can to promote buggery."

"The government is pursuing the breakdown of family life -- we've had one thing after another, whether it's tax policy or social policy that undermines marriage," he said.

"At the House of Lords at the moment, we have this gay marriage bill going through. This doesn't help."

"We don't only have an epidemic of obesity, we have a huge problem with AIDS. And the government's attitude is to do everything it can to promote buggery -- knowing that those two are intimately connected."

The comments are unlikely to surprise many onlookers, who have been aware of Lord Tebbit's aversion to gay issues over the years. He has publicly stated both his support for Section 28 and his opposition to same-sex relationships before.

However, Stonewall's Director of Parliamentary Affairs Alan Wardle, who has been monitoring the House of Lords' response to the Civil Partnership Bill, said he was shocked that Tebbit had managed to incorporate the issue into this argument.

"It's quite alarming that Lord Tebbit manages to get his extreme prejudices into a discussion on obese children," he told Gay.com U.K. on Thursday.

But, he forgot about the hole in the ozone layer!
Doesn't he know that the gays are responsible that, too?! And don't even get me started on how homosexuality is the root cause of high gas prices!

Well, he didn't make a direct link to homosexuality and obesity. Mostly the breakdown of the family unit and lifestyle. But yeah, sounds a little whacked.

I did have a conversation with my husband last night about the increase in obesity in American, especially among kids. Our portion sizes have gone up, we eat too much fast food, we feel cheated if we eat out and our plates are not overflowing with food, even though we have to stuff ourselves to eat all of it. Add to that a decrease in physical activity. All that could be linked to family life having changed. We are all so busy we don't go for bike rides or hikes or play basketball in the driveway. We are so tired from two parents working that we veg out on the sofa in front of the tv in the evenings instead of taking an after dinner walk.

I'm so glad our tv is still broken . .it is amazing how much more we get done.

Now, how homosexuality causes families to overeat and not spend time together is beyond my tired brain.

So...homosexuality is tolertated which leads to women having to work outside the home, which leads to fewer family meals together, which leads to obesity. Therefore, homosexuality causes childhood obesity.

    Okaaaay.

Now I can see how not having regular family meals can be a problem for some folk. Fast food then becomes the rule. But even in the busiest families that doesn't necessarily hold true. I know plenty of two-income families who have actual meals together. It takes some planning and energy, but it can be done.

I had a patient in the ER last night who said his ingrown toenail was causing him kidney pain...maybe these two should get together?

Apparently Bill Clinton and gay marriage can be blamed for everything

One of Norman's (Lord Tebbit) prior claims to fame, was his response to complaints of record levels of unemployment, with the comment that when his father had no job, he got on his bike and went looking for one! Ever since then, if anyone asks for the impossible, the British response is
    "On your bike!"

So gay marriage is to blame for the breakdown of family life. Hmmm......
Remember in the 80's when AIDs was just making the headlines and there was a big push to promote monogomy? Twenty years later and the fear is that a monogamous- legally binding relationship will cause the breakdown of family? Give me a break.

    REMEMBER?

Scapegoating: The Wartime Pattern? Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson Attack Gays, Feminists, and Progressives

    Date: Thursday, September 27th, 2001

Two days after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, television evangelists Jerry Falwell and PatRobertson, two of the most prominent voices of the religious right, said liberal civil liberties groups, feminists, homosexuals and abortion rights supporters bear partial responsibility for Tuesday's terrorist attacks because theiractions have turned God's anger against America. On September 13, during one of his regular appearances on PatRobertson's "The 700 Club," a TV show on the Christian Broadcasting Network, Jerry Falwell said,

"And I fear, as Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, said yesterday, that this is only the beginning.

And withbiological warfare available to these monsters; the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats - what we saw on Tuesday,as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact - if, in fact - God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve."
