Bad clinical day

  1. So as not to offend anyone, I won't post the particulars, but let me just say: I am so glad I'm not going tomorrow.

    Those people suck.

Del, sorry you had a bad day, me too, but I have to go back tomorrow. Clinicals just suck sometimes.

I'm in advanced med/surg, on a tele unit.

I will only make two points and then I will shut up.

    1. My preceptor conveniently forgot she had a student at key points throughout the day (and no, student-haters, it wasn't because she was swamped), but remembered to find me when there were IVP meds to do.
Why?, you ask. Well because she is an LPN and cannot push them.

    2. After completing all the nursing care for a team of patients for an 8 hour shift, including NG tube insertion, IV restarts, ekg interpretation... I sit down to chart something and the control freak US informs me that students are not allowed to sit.
I'd say I asked why but what I actually said was something like 'What are you talking about'. She said that the seats were reserved for REAL nurses and doctors and not to be used by students.

Well, change my name to Rosa Parks because my behind stayed in the chair. I had things to document, I was on my feet all day, nobody was milling around with no place to sit. I know I'll get flamed for this... so be it.

Who is your preceptor? If it was clinical, then your preceptor should have been your clinical instructor. Where was she?

Nah, my preceptor is different than my clinical instructor. Preceptor is a staff nurse. Our clinical instructor is rarely around, as this is our last semester and we're supposed to be more independent.

Besides, my real clinical instructor is OOT and we had a stand in who didn't even know what unit we were on.

Why would anyone flame you? Students can sit, too. I never gave up a chair for an MD or anyone else when I was a student unless I was asked VERY NICELY (politeness gets me every time).

    Just because you're a student doesn't mean you're a pushover.

Hmmm... I guess your school does it differently? In my clinicals, the instructor was always our first resource. The staff nurse can involve her/himself as little or as much as they please.

Then we have a practium our last semester, which is the only part that is under the total supervision of the staff nurse. No instructors around.

I guess I just don't even see the point of paying to have the instructor around if they serve no purpose as a resource to you.

Sorry your day sucked Reb. But I see you're drinking in the cyber bar, so you should be feeling better soon!

Thanks for saying that, although I'm sure I'm just another student with an attitude of entitlement. I feel like I'm entitled to sit down and chart throughout the course of my day, its not an unrealistic expectation.

Or at least, I didn't think it was before today.

    Heather,
Just for clarification, our last semester is divided into the before spring break part and the after break part.
I am before spring break right now, which is advanced m/s/t clinicals with as little instructor involvement as possible.
After spring break is the senior practicum. I'm trying to get them to maneuver me into a hospice practicum for that.

Sorry you had such a bad day. As for the unmanned, unused seats that are for the REAL doctors and the REAL nurses, well that's just REAL stupid. Hope tomorrow is better.
