Are They Nuts, Or What?

  1. I just heard that the Bush Administration is looking at ways to postpone the election in case of a terrorist attack. Are they nuts or just desperate? First it was the Patriot Act (straight out of 1984 ), then the WMD fiction, now this. I can see it now, "someone" plants a bomb in some large city, a couple 100 or 1000 people die, and it gives them a reason to say, "....we just have to wait to allow you to vote and possibly kick us out of office...." More dirty tricks from a Party famous for them.

Personally, I fear this administration more than any terrorist.

I can't imagine ANY party wanting to postpone an election.. I feel it is necessary for any administration to stay on top of terrorist activity. If terrorists claim they will strike the US, we need to take those threats seriously and not treat threats as trivial scare tactics. IMO

I love this criticism of the Patriot Act. The goverment adds the right to look at people's library record with a federal court order, and suddenly its 1984. Probably 90% of the country does not use the library, but its 1984, right out of Orwell. The government already had the power to look at library records with a court order before the Patriot Act, but now we fear this administration more than the terrorists.

I work in NYC and I saw the smouldering wreck where the World Trade Center once stood stood. I saw what the terrorists did!!! That is a heck of a lot scarier than if Big Brother has the right to my library records!!!

Aren't you upset about something that hasn't happened? We hear lots of things from all different sources.

Please say it isn't so - I don't think I could take much more of the "my candidate is better than your candidate" arguments.

It's a concern to hear this. However, having a plan in place is not a bad idea, truthfully. But what interests me is under what specific circumstances the election would be delayed. Very important stuff. I hope it would be absolutely the very last resort. And all would have to be in agreement to implement it. Who would make the decision? The president? The congress?

I heard the notion that if one state was the target, and the rest of the country had voted, it would unduly influence the state affected by a terrorist attack. I'm not sure about that. I personally know how I will vote. That wouldn't change. And if a state is so hard hit by a terrorist attack as to warrant a delay, would they even hve communications to know how the rest of the country voted?

Ha. Love it. You are right. It does sort of look like a PingPong match- back and forth.

Man, typing this is gonna hurt.

I knew how I was going to vote, but between this and proposing constitutional amendments that seek to limit rights, I just don't know anymore. There is no way I'd ever vote for Kerry. But, if this is true and the administration tries to put some kind of procedure in place to postpone elections, then I'm done. Maybe I'll vote Libertarian, or maybe I just won't vote at all.

From the article posted by Gwenith:

"The disclosure comes only a few days after U.S. authorities said they believe that al-Qaeda is planning a "large-scale" attack in the USA aimed at disrupting the presidential campaign and November elections."

Good thinking. Let's prevent a terrorist organization from disrupting the elections by pre-emptively disrupting them ourselves. At the very least, you can add Ridge to my list of people Bush needs to dump.

Folks, we are in a war on terrorism, and getting ready to have an election. That's hardly anything new in our experience. We held a general election in 1944, in the midst of fighting the Nazi's and the Japanese. Both were far better equipped and armed to disrupt elections than Al Qaeda ever thought of being. We held general elections during the Korean war, during the Vietnam War. In fact in every war that lasted long enough for a general election to come around, we held it. But let OBL shake his fist at us, and we start looking at ways to postpone the election. God, I hope this is in error.

This is NOT the way to fight terrorism. You don't do it by changing who you are at a fundamental level. This isn't a football game they are talking about postponing. And we aren't a banana republic, where the incumbent can postpone the election because things aren't going well. We don't run. We don't hide. We don't cower in corners.

Damn, whatever happened to our courage?
