Anyone live in a log cabin??

  1. I am dying for a log cabin. Have wanted one as long as I can remember. Hubby and I have started looking at different plans in anticipation of building one in the future.

    Just wondering about the pros and cons of a log cabin? I've never known anyone that lived in one. Well, we did rent one for a short while, but it was a reeeeal old one hand-built back in the ' it lacked alot. Any of you live in one?

    Here's the one we're considering right now---->

    We looked into building one for our cabin. These days the issues of heat and lighting have been resolved. Lots of insulated windows and some radiant heating make a big difference.

    However it just wasn't worth the big $ to us and we decided against one. We discovered that even for a 1200 sf one, by the time we got the kit, got it put together, finished inside with electricity, plumbing, cupboards, flooring, yaddayaddayadda... we'd be in it over $300,000 not including the land. Too much for this neck o' the woods, especially considering it's not going to be our primary residence for a few years.

    But I still love the idea of one. Good luck to you!

    I think they are so nice, but I've never been inside one. My BIL bought one a year ago, but he lives in the next state, and we haven't gotten the chance to go visit.

    Love the porch/patio on the pic you posted!

    I love that house! I've always wanted one, but wouldn't look good out here in the prairie. I lived in them in Calif. but wasn't the home owner so can't give you the ins and outs of maintenance.
    All I know is I love the look! So cool to decorate the inside also.
    Good luck to you!

    That house looks exactly like my aunts house. I absolutly love it, and has has willed it to me. Unfortunatlly I Love her more than the house. But anyway, she says she has a problem with bee's. I guess wood bee's? They've had the house for 4 yrs. no signs of termites. She said there is a differnt type of wood you should use to prevent the bee's. She found out about this AFTER her cabin was done.

    I grew up in a log home-lived there for 20+ years and loved it...Termites were never a problem ( the wood is treated and I believe termites like more "moisture" )...That being said, you can have problems with bore(sp?) bees that "drill" their own little perfect hole into the logs-they don't really penetrate the whole way thru, but bore into the logs and "nest" just have to spray those...Our house was built in the 80's and I did read on another reply they have newer "technology" logs that would resist this problem....another problem that we had was the dreaded WOODPECKER!!! We lived on 22 acres with no neighbors so my dad was going to shoot them---but they are a protected species-they actually peck the wood if they detect ANY bugs in the addition to damaging the wood, the other problem is that they are teritorial and often come back ( this is according to Penn State-my dad contacted them for assistance in getting rid of them, which he eventually did)...Anyway-don't let that scare you -if you can afford it-they make a beautiful home-very cozy and warm...and just think-you'll never have to look for a stud in the wall to hang a picture or ever buy a gallon of paint again!! AHHH, the joys in life!!! My husband and I would have loved to build one, but it was our first house and just couldn't do it $$$$ with what we "wanted" in it...Our next home for sure... ...If you have any other questions, please feel free to PM me... P.S. I love the picture of the one you chose!!!

    I love that pick. I fell in love with a log cabin a few years ago, I was so gonna buy it. It was the perfect mix of country right here in the city -- but alas, i was snatched up before I could get to it. Good luck with your househunting.

    My parents built a log cabin in the 80's that we lived in for about 10 years and I loved it! The only problems we had were mildew on the outside and those pesky wood bees. My step-dad wouls bleach the outside every few years and treat the wood with a mixture of Iodine and mineral oil to repel the bees. Worked like a charm! The only other problem we had was that my step-dad and his brother built it all by hand and Uncle Mike wasnt very attentive to detail, lol. There were some big chinks in the walls until dad filled them and we used to get a bat inside every now and again.

    Beautiful Tracy! Can we come visit?
    My son's grandpa & grandma have a house that's not a true log cabin, but is "rustic" and looks like a lodge inside, with big pine beams and ceilings--it's really beautiful. Lot's of big windows too. All the wood and fireplace make it feel cozy
