Anyone have a tubal ligation & regretted it?

  1. Hi,

I am considering getting a tubal ligation this summer before I start nursing school. I know I am done having children (I have three beautiful boys already) and really want to focus on my career.

Has anyone regretted having their tubes tied?

Also, how long should I plan on recovery?

    Thanks for any help.

    Michelle

I did. I had a tubal ligation in 1997. In 2001, I had a reversal done. Your chances of regretting it go up if you are under 30 years old. If I remember right, something like 30% of women will regret the decision. That's a lot of women! If you do have a ligation, I suggest that you get the clips or rings, instead of burning or cutting the tubes short. You have the highest chance of a successful reversal with the clips or rings. Also, google tubal ligation on the net and do some serious research. There are some excellent sites out there that help you to determine whether a tubal ligation is right for you.

Oh, I forgot to add about recovery time. I was on my feet the next day, and felt pretty much back to normal after 2 days.

On the other hand - I had my tubes tied at age 27 when my boys where 6 and 18 months old and have NEVER regretted it. I was in a stable relationship and still am and knew that I didn't want any more children. Even when we almost lost our oldest son several times during some very terrifying ICU admits, I have never regretted it. It is a deeply personal decision though - good luck.

I had mine when I was 34 after the birth of my last child. We have three and had already decided we were done. Never have regretted for a moment. For me, it made life more simply not to have to worry about birth control. I know I was pretty sore afterwards, but I had just had a baby too! Good luck!

I had a tubal ligation after second child too, at age 36. Haven't regretted it, for same reasons as phn92 posted.

I had a tubal after my 2nd child. I think I was about 36. No regrets whatsoever. It was great not having to ever think about birth control anymore. Can't help you on recovery because I had some other surgery done at the same time.

I had mine tied at age 24, after the birth of our fourth child. So far I don't regret my decision, since I know I'll be with my dh until we're old and gray (after ten years with this one, I don't think I could train another one... :chuckle ), and we already have lots of kids! While I was in the hospital with baby number four & having my tubal done, one of my nurses said she'd had hers done when she was 25. She said when she was in her early thirties, the baby urge hit her very strongly and that was the only time she regretted having them tied. I can understand that, too. Now that my youngest is almost four, I miss having a little baby, you know? Now I just have to borrow my friends babies, which actually is better than having another one of my own! Anyway, do what you feel is best for you. As for recovery, I was sore for a few days, but nothing major. I also noticed that my PMS became much worse, like another poster mentioned.

I had mine done 2 years ago during the c-section delivery of our 3rd child. I had severe pre-e with my 1st & developed pre-e with both subsequent pregnancies. We KNEW, as did my doctor, that we were ABSOLUTELY done with having any more children. My health simply could not afford to go through another pre-eclamptic pregnancy & emergency c-section delivery again. My tubes were CUT, tied & cauterized. I have a snowball's chance of ever having a successful reversal. I do NOT regret my decision. The last thing I would want is to have a clip or ring come undone & end up with a surprise. I was miserable being pregnant. I tried special diets, etc to reduce the risk of pre-e with my 2nd & 3rd, but I still got it. I don't ever want to do it again.

YES!!! I had mine done the day I delivered our second child last November. I was 22 at the time. I cried for weeks and prayed that I'd be the one in a million to fail. I had decided I didn't want any more kids, but I wouldn't mind more. Now I feel a little better about it. I had even asked the doc to wait until the next day. Nope. Had to be then. Then of course the spinal failed and I attempted to go through it with just a local. I couldn't hold still while he was digging through my insides so they finally gave me something IV. Anyhow, I honestly believe that if you're under 30 and/or pregnant at the time, you better wait.

I had mine after the birth of our 3rd child. I was 37 and have no regrets. Can't help you on the recovery time, as it was done along with my c-section. It's nice not to have to worry about birth control, especially at my age.

had one at age 24 and haven't regretted it yet. Menstrual cramps became a problem afterwards...don't know if it was related or not.
One of my best friends had a tubal ligation after the birth of her third daughter. Later she got divorced and remarrried. She had a reversal done and has two more children.
