Anyone else an ice chomper?

  1. I can't stop eating ice. I mean seriously, I can't stop it. What the heck is making me crave ice? Does anyone else do this?
I've been tested for anemia, came back normal. I never ever drink water, maybe I'm just dehydrated.
Ever heard of an ice addit before.

Maybe it's a nervous habit? Or done out of boredom? Or you're hungry?

    Edit: Dry mouth?

My mom says that when she was pregnant with me, she craved ice all the time. She even took buckets of it in the bathroom with her when she took baths, lmao. Don't know if that has anything to do with my nasty "ice" habit, LMAO. But, yep, crunch, crunch here too.

Yes, I've heard of the ice craving thing...unfortunately, can't find too much out about it except one psych MD said he noticed it when pt's go on or off meds...

I can't live without it! My husband makes fun of me for always wanting the "good" ice (aka crushed ice). I will go out of my way to find a place with crushed ice versus the hard, cubed stuff. I will choose Sonic over every other fast food place just becuase of their ice! Do you think we need a 12 step program? :uhoh21:

Were we seperated at birth? I'm the same way, there's good ice and bad ice. My mom thinks I'm a lunatic when I say this but she just doesn't know good ice.

I chomp when I'm at work. Our hospital is very dry and I find that ice chips keep my mouth moister longer. If only I could carry around a coffee mug of ice chips wherever I go. I also chomp because I'm too impatient to wait for it to melt. I don't suck on suckers or popcicles. I chomp at them. I sucked my thumb until I was 5 and that probably has something to do with it. I'm orally fixated.

Do you think we need help? I guess if I'm asking that means yes.

I see that you say you've been tested for anemia and it was normal.

Anyway, ice chomping is a sign of anemia. It can also be very annoying to your coworkers. One of our PCA's used to constatnly chomp ice and when I was preggers, it drove me NUTS!!!!!! Turns out she was very anemic.

Seriously though, be considerate of your coworkers as it is nerve wracking to those around you. Thanks.

Ooooh, I love that crushed pellet-like ice!!! It's the only kind I can munch on, and I can see how it would be addicting. Our hospital has it for filling patient water pitchers and stuff, but unfortunately our unit doesn't have a machine. We're NICU, so we don't give out water pitchers. No ice for me.

I'm so jealous about the Sonic trips - I totally want to go there! It really ticks me off - I'm in Chicago, and they play Sonic commercials CONSTANTLY. What I wouldn't give for a sourdough sandwich and cherry limeade! But hello, the closest Sonic is over 100 miles away!!! WHY do they TORTURE us with those commercials!?!?!

I had no idea it was a sign of anemia. Any theories on that?

If you never drink water, eat all the ice you can to make up for it.

ETA: Sorry, the Sonic sandwiches are Texas Toast, not sourdough. I just saw another freaking commercial that corrected me. SICK SICK SICK how these commercials are on so often.

I love to chew ice! Cubes! Because I can. I couldn't chew hardly anything or my teeth would crack and break. I got them all capped. Hard porcelin crowns..worth the money for me. I chew ice like second nature...and so does my dentist. It's not anemia for me. My HGB is always 15-17...for a girl no less. Was anemic as a teen...but...I only remember wanting to chew suckers...not ice.

Good thing I'm alone for half my shift. I chomp without regard to others. I will be more cautious from now on.

Being the non-nurse type, why do anemics chew ice?
