Any thoughts on Direct TV?

  1. we're moving in 2 weeks and i'm really sick of our cable company and the cost of it - i could get a better package from direct tv for 14$ cheaper a month.

does anybody have direct tv? love it? hate it? problems?

    thanks in advance!

I have it and haven't had any problems so far.

Live in an apartment or your own home? I ask because if it is a rented apartment, the installation guy won't even add a scratch, nail nor screw when he is installing. Apparently, they are not allowed to "deface rented property". That means you/SO might have to do a bit of additional 'self-installation' work (I'm talking wiring. He'll set it up so you have TV and it's running and all that. You may just have to do some of the stapling, tagging, nailing of the wires inside your property/apartment yourself).

I'm paying a good chunk of money for the Premium package - only because of the one channel that shows hockey and NHL.... and I love me my Sabers hockey!

PS: Go for the DVR package - I promise you'll love it

    Thanks Roy! Quick response!

We're moving to a house in 2 weeks so hopefully installation isnt a problem.

We have DVR now, and im addicted to it. I cant go back!! I dont know what I did without it before!

I think I may try it...

Couldn't get DirectTV here. Sat in my driveway and stated no way for signal.

Called Dish and connected same day.

Depends on personal preference and availability of signal. Good luck.

i've had it for three years.

similar reasoning to roy -- needed the football package, no one else offered it.

really don't have any complaints, other than losing a signal during bad rain storms. it usually comes back on pretty quickly, depending on how bad the storm is and how long it takes to pass. that was the reason a friend of mine switched back to cable. during storms was when her kids most wanted to watch tv (couldn't play outside) and the signal would often be lost, and they'd drive her nuts.

doesn't seem as though i ever lose mine for more than 15-20 minutes at at time, though. even during tornado-type storms. usually it is <5 min.

at least some idiot can't come by and accidentally cut the lines. they are doing construciton in my area, and that happened periodically to my cable lines.

We have both Direct and Dish available here. We researched both and Dish had what we wanted at better prices. Most of our neighbors think so too, because almost every house has a Dish dish (sorry!). I've only seen 3-4 houses in the entire subdivision with a Direct dish.

my neighbor has it and loves it. We've looked into it but haven't decided yet. When we moved to our house 6 months ago we had to change cable/internet/phone providers all together and we looked into dish and direct tv. We actually went to Best Buy and looked at their brochures there recently but haven't done anything yet.
However--funny you wrote this question b/c just YESTERDAY one of the girls at our cookout was telling me how they have direct tv and love it!

and i think with direct TV you can go to best buy and get a digital video recorder for $99.00 but you get a rebate for $99.00 so its free but I'm not sure how much the DVR service costs and it depends if you want to record shows while your working. but direct TV has good service the only problem is during storms sometimes the signal will go out.

I think that was right, Dave--Best Buy had some pretty good incentive rebates.

Where we live, satellite t.v. is the only way to get good television reception. We have DirecTV. Sometimes during winter snow storms, the reception isn't good. But we had problems, on occasion, when we had cable. We're currently paying the same amount of money for DirecTV that when we had cable for out first home. It ain't necessarily cheap if you go for the premium package (which includes HBO, Star, etc.) but at least it offers you package choices. I do wish that we can pick and chose then pay for specific stations. We only watch about 10 to 12 stations on a regular basis.

i had directv for 8 yrs in so ca, loved it. currently have dish, only because that's what bf got, had a deal offer and took it. they are both available in this area (no ca). i'd have to do research to see which would actually be better...i'm sure it depends on where you live, what you watch, etc. i'd say they are comparable.

i totally agree with you. i wish they would allow you to "build your own package".
