Another Vet/Puppy Question

  1. So Fattie's been post-op neuter now for about 2 weeks. It will be 2 weeks on Monday. I was supposed to make an appt to have his stitches removed but forgot.

And then I thought, crap, I can remove the stitches myself. I mean, it's not hard, I've removed my own stitches before.

Should I do this, or will you all think I'm some RN playing vet with her dog?

We removed our dog's stitches with no problem.
Our vet told us it was fine to do as long as there were no signs of infection. The hardest part was getting him to lay still

    You`re a nurse=nurses frequently remove stitches

    Go for it !!
I removed my kitties post hysto stitches with no problems...

I guess I don't see the problem with it. Would your vet mind?

My vet knows I'm a nurse, so he's told me in the past to remove Kady's stitches or staples if I want to (post c-section).

I would do it myself, don't know how compliant Fattie will be though!

Go for it. But in my case, with my luck I would pull my doggies stitches and something would happen! But, could happen at the vet too. Good luck!

Sometimes dogs behave better at the vet's b/c they are scared. He might be a handfull @ home. We usta have a dog we had to take to the groomer's to get her toenails trimmed b/c she acted much better away from home. Just something to think about. I have removed stitches on our dogs before with no trouble.

I was gonna take Halle's sutures out myself...but jay wants us to take her to the vet for it...i think he just wants the reassurance that everything they saw inside looked ok, cuz one of her littermates died of a rare GI defect...so we're gonna take her tomorrow, then bring her home and desert her to go to the SU lacrosse game....

Did you go for it? Hubby and I took out stitches on our dogs...even the dog who pulled them out and got ER doggy staples!(yeah, we took him to the Vet ER) But we got great dogs...all shelties, so they gotta be good. :-) well, except for the one who took them out himself...LOL

Vet told us we could take them out ourselves, and he didn't even know I was a nurse. Unbelievably, "Trouble" didn't give us any trouble.

I took out Mercy girl's stitches. No problems. Just be careful if he's a wiggly worm...
