Another mad British polititian

  1. I can't remember where I read the post regarding Norman Tebbit and his comments about obesity and homosexuality, but I found this whilst reading the morning news. The British Health Secretary, John Reid has practically advocated smoking for the poor, as it is one of their only pleasures.,00.html

It just goes to show that some of our politicians have no regard for safety and health. I am not that rich, but it would be a great pleasure for me to ply him with alcohol and watch him walk along a train track.... what do you reckon..

Goodness, gracious! What sort of substance is he using that is impairing his judgement? Or has he simply been out in the midday sun for too long?

In his defence, he was making the case (badly) that when you are poor, and struggling with poverty, unemployment, ignorance, poor housing, and general social deprivation, then perhaps the risk attached to smoking is the least of your worries, although "middle-class academics" would insist that it is.
    He's still mad, though!

Don't know what smokes cost over there, but smoking is so expensive over here when people quit they are able to afford things like cars, clothes, and things they never would have. So I would encourage them to quit smoking if for no other reason than the economic advantage of quitting.

I can almost see his point. There might be other priorities for the poor. But being a minister of health, I agree it's rubbish.

We all do that to a certain point don't we? In the middle of a bad night shift, I could have a cola or something healthier, but at the time I don't care enough to get the healthier alternative, I want a coke. It's the only bit of pleasure I have at 4 am! God help the person who tries to stop me
