My grandmother used to rub a baby's gums with Bourbon when they cried. It was to numb the teething pain.

Grandma rubbed brandy on her kids' gums for teething, i was told she did the same for me as well.

My sister used to rub Paragoric (which is opium) on her children's gums when they were teething, or if they had a lot of colic. It was recommended by the doctor and pharmacist, and sold openly for that purpose.
