Abortion Clinic Scandal

  1. With all the outrage that has been posted here about the oil companies and fracking, I am wondering why no one has said a peep about that abortion clinic trial that has been ongoing for a while. I guess the MSM media has just been MIA about reporting on it, and CNN was shamed into saying something about it yesterday.

The pre-trial gag order might have had something to do with it. (All bolding added by me.)

So: Liberals covered Gosnell when the story broke. A gag order effectively snuffed out media coverage of the case for two years. But when the trial began, it didn't break into the MSM the way all manner of random murder or fraud trials have. If this does start to captivate the MSM, it probably won't get covered or analyzed the way conservatives prefer. A more sane and responsible system of inspections could have nabbed Gosnell without any change whatsoever to abortion law.
    Gosnell, Continued

Gosnell was charged, and magazines like Slate wrote about the charges at the time. He's accused of performing illegal abortions. In Pennsylvania, an abortion after the 24th week of pregnancy is only legal if a physician proves it was necessary to "preserve life of mother or prevent serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of bodily function." Gosnell didn't do that.

But there is a political scandal here. Grand jury investigators were baffled: How did Gosnell's clinic, an infamous place in the tri-state area, go un-inspected for so long? Basically, the regulators blew it. "Even though the first DOH Certificate of Approval for Gosnell's clinic expired on December 20, 1980," write the investigators, "the next documented site review was not conducted until August 1989." After a 1992 visit, regulators reported that the clinic was wheelchair-accessible, even though it's "multi-leveled and has no elevator." After 1993, the state didn't follow up complaints about the clinic.

If you're pro-choice, say, and you worry that the Gosnell story is being promoted only to weaken your cause, you really should read that grand jury report. "DOH could and should have closed down Gosnell's clinic years before," write the investigators. Why wasn't it? Were state regulators nervous about igniting a political fight about abortion? Is the regulatory system incompetent or under-funded? And are there other states where the same could be said? Social conservatives are largely right about the Gosnell story. Maybe it's not a raw political story. It's just the story of a potential mass murderer who operated for decades as government regulators did nothing.
Kermit Gosnell: The Alleged Mass-Murderer and the Bored Media

Social conservatives should probably be a bit cautious about flogging this story ... Gosnell was performing procedures that were already illegal under PA law. His "practice" as a modern-day back room abortionist is exactly why this is a life and death issue for reproductive rights activists.

The piece quoted above asks an interesting question: why wasn't the clinic shut down?

And, to echo the OP ... where was the conservative outrage over the exploitation and murder of those (poor and minority) women? Too busy passing state laws all over the country to make even more procedures illegal because parking lots are too small or women balk at bogus transvaginal ultrasounds?

No, they aren't right about the Gosnell story. If you've never heard of the Gosnell story, it's not because of a coverup by the liberal mainstream media. It's probably because you failed to pay attention to the copious coverage among pro-choice and feminist journalists, as well as the big news organizations, when the news first broke in 2011. There would be something rich, if it weren't so infuriating, about these (almost uniformly male, as it happens) reporters and commentators scrambling to break open this shocking untold story. You know, the one that was written about here, here and here, to name some disparate sources.
There is no Gosnell coverup - Salon.com

If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would be making the argument that there was a conservative cover-up to hide the real-life consequences of their crusade against reproductive rights.

I live near enough to the event that we have daily coverage in both paper and over the airwaves. This man was doing illegal abortions. With more and more restrictions we can expect more shady, exploiter characters to have fly by night chop shops.

I have no idea how other msm is handling it. I know I got it ad nausea when it was discovered and with each court appearance of any of the staff it gets picked up again.

This trial is not only about abortion. It shows clearly the failures of many. Hard to believe no employee quit over the things that have been reported. One would expect some nurse to see what was happening and quit on the spot and put a call into the police immediately.

When was the gag order lifted? Because I have seen reporting on this trial for at least a week now on conservative websites. Maybe the MSM thought it would just go away if they didn't bother.

ABC has been broadcasting it routinely as has our local paper.

Perhaps, as you say, because it is a local thing for you. There has been nothing on MSM out this direction until yesterday.

ABC is MSM. This was not Podunk TV. Feeds go back and forth all the time. Our paper is Podunk so I expected it to be covered heavily here.

I see murderers quite frequently in my business. This man is a disgusting person who was filling a gap for women who were desperate. Easier access to all forms of birth control and termination get rid of the niche this man filled. Most murders are done with little thought and no reward. This man got rich and planned each murder.

I will clarify. Nothing here on abc or any of the other msm outlets about the trial.

It is a murder trial. you don't get the details of the murders around here normally. You did not get the news that an honor student was shot to death at a soccer game, and that student was a friend of my DGS. He was collateral damage. Just another homicide by gun. I know that is not news.

The murdering doctor is news only because of all the bad circumstances. Beyond that for other regions of the country it is just s story from some place not like them. Not reporting is part of the head in the sand mentality.

Your original post compared it to the fracking and concerns of spilled oil and tar sands. it is only news to some of us. Fracking is a huge issue here. We are near a radon belt. Disturbances of the radon will bring radioactive water an other material to he surface. We have a finite amount of water on his planet. We are about out of oil and the fracked stuff is for export.

Exxon has gone out of its way to minimize coverage. That is different than the murder trial. No one is buying so coverage can't or won't be done.

Right? It's sad just how strong the grip of ideology can be upon some minds. Kermit Gosnell happened because of abortion restrictions, not because devaluing human life leads to more devaluing of human life? Um...yeah, okay.

When one class of human being is declared not human, atrocities against them become OK. Look throughout history to find ample evidence. All abortions are as horrifying as what Gosnell did. People just lie to themselves about that so they can feel better and not have to look too closely.

i agree that abortion IS horrifying.
still....sometimes a woman if forced to pick the lesser of 2 evils, and i have to support choice vs thinking of the ensuing panic if choice weren't available.
however, mid and late stage abortion is unthinkable to me...
and this guy was satan himself.
