A Wonderful Way to Explain Death to a Patient

  1. A sick man turned to his doctor, as he was preparing
to leave the examination room and said, "Doctor, I am afraid
to die. Tell me what lies on the other side."

Very quietly, the doctor said, "I don't know." "You don't know? You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?"

The doctor was holding the handle of the door; on the
other side came a sound of scratching and whining, and as he
opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on
him with an eager show of gladness.
Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did you
notice my dog? He's never been in this room before.

He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his
master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in
without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of
death, but I do know one thing... I know my Master is there
    and that is enough."

May today there be peace within you. May you trust
God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. I
believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our
feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.

Then so if god is your master then you are a slave of god right?

I can see where that story might bring comfort to some. I don't think it literally implies that man is a slave of god, but that he trusts his god much as the dog trusts his human master and believes that in his presence, all will be well.

I have many times thought that those who believe in heaven must fear death much less than those of us don't. I wish I had the comfort of knowing that people I loved, who had gone before me, would be there to greet me. And that I would be there to greet those I loved, who come after me. I think this is a beautiful story for patients with these beliefs.

I like it Fran. It is you all the way through. I think it could be really reassuring for some patients too though definitely not all.

This would an example of faulty reasoning.

But since you asked, no, that's not right.

If you belong to someone, that doesn't mean you are their "slave." And by referring to God as the Master, that doesn't make us slaves either.

This would be too complicated to explain properly--but the simple answer to your question is, no.

loved this story fran. i agree with mercyteapot about it being a wonderful story to tell the one's who believe in it. i too yearn to die in peace and with anything in mind or belief that will get me there.

as to the one's who don't believe in this: that is great, no one is implying anything at all, so in my humble opinion......... kindly just try to "move on" past the post if it is not suited to you and enjoy the rest of your day.

i too refuse to believe that we are a slave to god to answer the previous question. it's a very personal subject and would rather not engage in religious dilemma.

    thanks again fran for sharing.

I chose to follow,so that means I'm not a Slave.Slaves don't get to chose.Theres a song sang by Mercy Me called, I can only Imagine.Thats all I can do and I'm sure my Imagination will not even compare to what it will be like.Revelations gives us some discription.Streets of Gold.Gates made of 1 giant pearl each. But alot of people don't believe the bible or at least not all of it.I believe we all imagine it differently.IMHO
