A Wacky Question About T.v. Game Shows.......? I Wanna Know...

  1. I was watching "The Price is Right" a couple of weeks ago. That WAY BEYOND ELDERLY- WAY BEYOND SENIOR CITIZEN-- host guy..............got me to thinkin......
That show has been on nearly 50 years.......... have you ever heard of anyone who was on the show?

I have lived and traveled all over the country.....and I've met a lot of people ! Yet, I don't recall ever hearing anyone say they were on the show or knew someone who was on it.

The reason I was pondering this is:

Someone told me that the people/ "guests" on the Jerry Springer Show are not "real people" at all. That they are NYC and LA actors/ wannabee actors, who are hired to
come on the show & portray folks with all these problems and complaints. To "entertain" us viewers... that everything...dialogue/behavior/outlandish acts are all written by writers and the whole show is "scripted."

So, in the same vein, I was wondering if The Price is Right and similar shows are all "creations " of the producers/writers and
presented as real life events when , in actuality, they are

Does anyone have any info on this or an opinion?
Have you known anyone who was actually on one of these shows?

    Just call me CURIOUS.

Yes, I knew someone who not only appeared on the Price is Right but won the grand prize. She was a friend of a friend...happened about 10 years ago. The taped the show in August and her appearance was on Christmas Day. The grand prize was a house full of furniture. She had to sell most of the prize to pay the taxes. And she also said the furniture, although it looked great on camera, was cheap, cheap, cheap.

I knew someone who was on Jeopardy and won about 30,000 dollars. He was a pre-med student; he was in one of the college week episodes.

I've always thought that stuff looked cheap!! I think I'd be really bad at hiding my disappointment- all those laminate and fake wood pieces, shiny under the spotlights. Bleahhhhh.

I have heard though that on shows were it appears that people are picked randomly out of the audience, they are actually screened somewhat beforehand. They like to pick people who get really excited about winning. Wouldn't do to have some dead fish up there.

I think the game shows are still pretty heavily monitored because of the big game show scandal back in the 1950's. I recently saw a "Let's Make a Deal" reunion or anniversary type show. On this show they invited a woman on the show who had been on about 30 years before. During her "deal" she guessed wrong and lost the chance to win 2 different cars. On the anniversary show, she once again guessed wrong and lost another car.

Yes I know a lady who appeared on "The Price is Right" and she won a grandfather clock and a sofa, which she proudly used both. She was a sweet lady.

Thanks for the replies. It's just hard to imagine a show that has been on nearly 50 years & to think how rare it is to hear of someone who was in the audience or was an actual participant.
