SRINAGAR: Massive destruction has been caused in Uri sector in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, which falls close to the epicentre of today's severe earthquake, Defence officials said

Destruction is massive in Uri sector. Initial reports are that not many houses are standing in the area, they said.

Officials said due to earthquake a fire has broken out in Uri which had damaged some houses.

"There are casualties but how many, we can't say as yet as we are focussing on rescue operations. Army has been pressed into the operations," the officials said.

Meanwhile, tremors are still being felt in Srinagar and other places of the Kashmir valley intermittently.

Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was disrupted as mounds of earth from a hillock fell on the road at Karol near Ramban.

While heavy vehicles are still stranded on the highway, traffic authorities are letting light vehicles pass.

There were reports of house collapse in Batut and Doda.

In Jammu, several houses developed cracks in the old city.

Power, water and telephone services have been disrupted acroos the state. Mobile phones are, hopwever, working.
I'm confident that units of J&K (JAK) Rifles have been pressed into duty. It's still a wait and watch situation. From the descriptions of conditions Uri and nearby Poonch and Rajouri sectors, it sounds pretty bad.

PM of India has already passed on his condolences and has told the ruler of Pakistan that India is standing by to help in any which way it can.

Similar assurances have been guaranteed to Afghanistan - where a sizeable Indian detachment is already present.

Unfortunately, it will probably get even worse. Not sure what is going on anymore.

Now there is a yound boy in Indonesia that was just diagnosed with bird flu, if that is the case, it is going to get only much worse all over.

dh just spoke with his family in islamabad. they're o.k. but naturally very upset. amazes me that the phones are working with all that destruction. lots of tremors since the quake. heartbreaking to hear that so many of the victims were children, killed or trapped in their schools. and so much of the affected area is not reachable except by helicopter, and without the heavy equipment needed for rescue efforts.

really scary with all that is going on in the world. seems almost like mother nature is laughing at mankind, so assured of our ability to master nature and be in control.

I just watched the updates on this horrific event. The death toll is now over 30,000! A lot of the damage from this earth quake accured in areas that are "normally inaccessable on a good day".

    Sad. . . .
