2 questions for Brian

  1. Hi there!

    1) Is there, or is it possible to have, such as thing as a birthday list? Perhaps it could display somewhere the user names of the people who have added their birthdays to their user profiles? I have noticed that at the top of some page or other it gives the name of the newest member to join up - something like that. Like birthdays this week or birthdays today, like that.

    2) I have a program that scrubs a lot of cookies. Also an annoying hubby who likes to do that manually. Which makes logging in here difficult (duhhhhh). I've noticed that it's hard to get logged in - I can't find a direct link that will get me to the place that lets me log in. The "register" link takes me somewhere that asks if I'm older than dirt or younger, and then takes me right back where I started. It seems that to get to sign in, I have to look at the general discussion, try to register and then look at the general discussion again, when the box in which I can write my user name is presented. Yay

I'm just wondering if either you could make it an option on the home page, or else just tell me how to find it without having to do the touch your nose, scratch you elbow, say 'smitherly' and then knock kind of entrance ritual.

Ah yes, Trisha. That works as long as your cookies are intact. If you don't have cookies going then the computer you're logging in to, has no idea it's ever seen you before.

Cookies are little bits of code that a server-type computer puts in your computer when they communicate. Sometimes they come in handy for stuff like this when you want to be recognized when you come back. But sometimes the information is a bit more invasive than what you're interested in revealing, and can also leave some pretty big security holes in your system. Also sometimes you just bloody-mindedly don't want somebody else to know certain things about you. Lots of cookies track not only what you do on "this" site, but where you came from, what else you've looked at, how your browser is configured..... and stuff like that. So not everybody allows their computer to accept cookies.

That's why mine doesn't automatically log me in each time.

you can change your password to something that is easy for you to remember. I wish I could tell you exactly how I did this--but it was shear luck (I held my four leaf clover, turned around in my chair three times, said a prayer to St. Francis, and typed with my toes). Hey you never know.

Now I can access from any computer because my password doesn't consist of 48 letters, numbers, and dates.

My password is really easy to remember. What's hard is finding the little box where you're allowed to put in the name and password! lol

It's not hard to log into this site from other, unfamiliar computers. You just have to direct the browser to www.allnurses.com and there you are. Then you have to find the box to enter your name and password the first time. I'm rhinking that I've made it harder than it has to be, in that I *THINK* It's always at the bottom of the "all discussions" page.

If you have cookies set up on the 'other' computer, then this site will remember you when you come back using that computer. If somebody else uses the same computer for the same site, then it might think you're the other person.

I have no trouble logging in but I have no idea what you're talking about on the birthdays. I scanned the whole home page and find nothing.Carol

It's actually at the bottom of the nursing discussions page - you know the one that lists the various forums. In smallish print.
