Gere was very good, and seemed to be having a lot of fun, but there was so much talent in Chicago that he didn't particularly stand out (over Queen L. for example). John Reilly had a much larger role and did an excellent job. It is the only movie from last year that I watched twice.

Daniel D-L's greasy hair would have been enough to make me not vote for him. Everyone in that movie needed a good scrubbing, IMHO.

The Hours was the only one of these movies that I walked out of (after about 40 minutes). Stunningly boring P R O C E S S I N G, though some of the costumes were ok as was some of the photography. (Yes, I know it was a "chick flick," but it still does not qualify for an AA nomination in any category, IMHO.)

One theory put forward is that Gere would've had a better chance if he'd been submitted in the Best Supporting Actor category rather than Best Actor.

I think probably because Michael Caine slipped in at the last minute for The Quiet American. No one was expecting him to be in, but the others were getting a lot of attention.

I went on google.com and typed in michael caine oscar and got lots of interesting info. I love M. Caine and will go see anything he is in. He has received five oscars.
    1999 Cider House Rules
    1986 Hannah and her sisters
    1983 Educating Rita
    1972 Sleuth
    1966 Alfie

One of my favorites, and please write this down for a movie to watch on a cold and rainy night. I've seen it 4-5 times. "Blame it on Rio." And if you have teenagers in the house, so much the better. Anyway, the site says "The Quiet American" was due to be released around 9-11 and was held up. It was presented last year in Toronto to raves and later in Los Angeles. Caine said he thinks it is his best performance so far. I hope he wins. He has certainly give us 40 plus years of good entertainment and he lives a good life, a good role model for young people.
Richard Gere: I looked it up, (answering my own question)
went to gogle.com and richard gere oscar

It seems Richard Gere has ticked off some big shots. it says:
"The producers of the Academy Awards weren't too happy about the political comments Richard Gere made on Oscar Night. The producers VOWED NEVER TO ASK Gere back. Gere critisized the Chinese president Deng Xiaoping, ask the world-wide audience to pray for the Dalai Lama, and return him to Tibet, etc.etc. "Gere is a Buddhist it says. It is several paragraphs long. Anyway, I guess this is the reason. I just kept hearing comments on various t.v. shows on why wasn't Gere nominated.
Can't tick off the BIG WIGS who put their $$$ up to produce the show. I went to see "Chicago" twice too. I will buy the DVD as soon as it comes out, but wanted to see it on the big screen. It has 13 nominations. Only Titanic got more - 14. Richard was good, loved the tap dancing in the courtroom scene. Queen Latifah-what a spirited and talented performance. WOW !

I think Gere took a gamble on the lead actor category and lost. But the whole entertainment world knows that Gere makes his fellow actors look good. Look at all his cohorts who were nominated, including Diane Lane from Unfaithful. I don't think his lack of a nom will hurt his career.

I agree totally with you sjoe. He was good, but I don't think that he stood out as much. I loved the movie, but the only actor that really stood out was Queen Latifah IMHO.
