""Nine year old girls---what do they like??""

  1. I am going shopping next week for a birthday present for a special niece. She will be 9. I will spend about $100. I do not have a clue what girls that age like. I know she has Barbie's but isn't real crazy about ANOTHER one. I know the boys like Lego's. But girls??? .... Can you all give me some suggestions??

The best thing you can give your niece is your time and to create some happy memories ... you don't have to spend $100 to do this. I'd take her out to HER favorite restaurant, get manicures, go to a movie, then have her pick out a gift from a local bookstore. Summer is coming -- she will have lots of spare time -- what better time spending it then reading something that appeals to HER? Have the day be about HER -- but more about spending time together and less about the amount of the gift. Years from now, she may not remember the Abercrombie outfit -- but she WILL remember having her nails painted an outlandish color with her favorite auntie. Think about it.

Though this will nont cost 100.00, Diaries are all the rage lately- you can find all sorts of different types, anything that actually locks is popular.

DITTO DITTO DITTO! A nine year old would go bonkers over a day spent this way, especially with a favorite auntie in tow. Have fun!

I think she is about the age that a camera and scrapbook would be great too. I wish someone would have gave me one when I was younger. I had a diary when I was 11 and those are perfect to. Make sure it has a lock and key or a combination tho!

I'm with susanmary! Everyone will spend money on her. But you could be the one to take the time to make her feel special!

    Great idea!

I agree with susanmary also. Take the $100 bucks, spend the day with her. Get the manicure and heck, even pedicure! Time is sometime so precious to share!

Thanks for excellent suggestions. I hate to complain .....but....I was at Walmart and 3/4 of the toy shelves were boys stuff. I like the idea of spending the day and creating memories, however, I still want to know what they like. Forty years ago, when I was nine, the camera, scrapbook, diary, doll, a book, would have been "IN". I could have and did have all of them at age nine. .....In forty years, with all the womens lib, putting a man in space, computers and all the technology, are we still giving girls the same gifts they received in 1960 ??? I just had this idea there was some "cool" stuff on the market for girls....there isn't? ?????? If there isn't, a couple of generations of moms has failed girls.

I think a camera is a neat idea-I like the I-Zone from poloroid with sticky film (I want one!) but I'm not sure how much it costs. When I was 9 I liked to make things, like bracelet making kits and things to make and share with your friends. You may want to check at the craft store for some "girl" ideas. Books are great, or even a magazine subscription to a young girl magazine or something she's interested in like animals or something.

Those kinds of gifts are always better then techno-gifts, they never become out of date!

My sister (12) said that the new movie "Spirit" (the one about a horse) is really good, if you're looking for things to do

I also agree with susanmary, she hit the nail on the head! I have a 9-year-old daughter so I'm speaking from experience. "Quality girl time" will mean more to her than anything.

I raised three daughters with the youngest being 14 now. Definitely in is digital photography. There are models under $100. Anything hi tech is in- check out Best Buy or Circuit City and ask specifically for this gender-age group. We did get my daughter a digital, about 4 yrs ago, the photo quality was not great- but they did send nicely over the computer, I bet the quality is better now.
A movie, a manicure and lunch is a great idea! Or a day at a waterpark-my sounds like a fun venture!

Diaries will never be outdated! Every girl loves having her own diary to keep memories in. Get her a diary with a key to keep it locked. Find out what kind of books she likes to read, and buy her a good book. Books will never be outdated, either. How about redecorating her bedroom if she doesn't already have it decorated the way she likes? Girls love to have their own taste in their rooms. Even a new bedspread and drapes would liven up a little girl's room. Does she have roller blades? Ice skates? Buy her a pair and take her skating...and skate with her. My youngest daughter loved artsy stuff when she was nine and ten. She is now 25 and still into artsy stuff. Think of things your niece loves, and choose something from that list. Have fun shopping!
