"Power Surges" ("mature" ladies only)

  1. This is a question for you more "mature" ladies out there--

Anyone have any good menopause/hot flash remedies? I turned 50 last month, and am suddenly finding myself having to turn on the air conditioner and then the heat within the same 30 minutes period--YUCK!
Anyone have any sucess with black cohosh or any of the other "natural" remedies?
I don't want to go the estrogen replacement route because one of my sisters has a history of breast CA (she's OK now).

Ooooooooo.........HATE THEM!! I just suffer thru. Soy seems to work, to some degree, but I have good bone density, and the non memopausal maidens in our office wear sweaters!

So far nothing seems to work. I haven't tried black cohash though. Did the soy thing, tried HRT, some OTC relief stuff. It has been very frustrating. There are nights I just don't sleep. Working in the cath lab has it's benefits though. When I first started there I used to bundle up, now it's comfortable most of the time. I just wish I could sleep

Went to the Health Food Store (Clark's, in my area) and picked up an herb blend item called "Hot Flash," from Source Naturals. Contains Benistein-Rich Soy Concentrate, Black Cohosh Root Extract, Dong Quai Root Extract, Licorice Root Extract, Vitex Berry Extract. Works for me! Ran out a few months ago, couldn't find it, hot flashes started up again. Finally located product and started back on it, hot flashes disappeared. I also drink 1 cup or so of soy daily (Trader Joe's soy milk is the best, IMO). Good luck!

Essential 3, got it on the net. Seems to be working on the "hormonal moments" AND I'm sleeping better.

I'm using something called Estro Max, which contains black cohosh, dong quai, soy, and some other herbs. So far, so good.......I've been on it a couple of weeks, and my hot flashes are already less frequent. Even the night sweats are less severe, and I'm used to waking up 3-4 times a night in the middle of a lake!

Now, will someone tell me why taking Ativan also reduces night sweats?! I was given some for sleep, which has been problematic ever since I started this change of life thing, and while I only take it once or twice a week on average, on the nights I take it, I don't wake up until morning, and even then, I'm not all funky like I am on the mornings when I haven't taken any. I don't want to become dependent on the stuff, which is why I don't take it very often, but I do like being able to sleep through the night and stay dry in the bargain. I just don't understand why a benzo would have this effect...my sister took Valium during her menopause, and she said she had pretty much the same experience. Weird.

I've been in the 'suffer through' group
mentally framing symptoms as excercises in growth and development
[I also in my past 'denied' a broken leg and appendicitis...]
    But
at times I wonder about the risk of
    spontaneous combustion!

I tried several of the herbal remedies without any luck, I've had a TAH and the sad little ovary they left in wore it self out in 6 years and couldn't make enought to keep up even with help. I take estrogen 2mg/day without cycling (don't have to because of the hyst). My bones have nothing to do with it...I was miserable and I was going to end up divorced.

Thanks for the replies and advice ladies. Will try some of the suggested remedies. And, I suppose, the main thing to focus on is what Cactus Wren said, "this too, shall pass!"

I know what you're going through. I've found a couple of things helpful. One is to add two tablespoons of ground flax to my cereal in the morning. The second is the addition of soy. I use soy milk on my cereal and in cooking plus I drink a Revival shake daily. I haven't had a period since October and I rarely have a hot flash. I do have some trouble sleeping though (haven't found a solution here, just take a hot bath and then go to bed about an hour earlier than I used to).

I had a total hyst three years ago and shortly thereafter started the flushes. I tried everything and nothing worked for me except estratest which works for the flushes and the libido issues LOL. Of course one would not want to smoke and take hormones. I am a vegetarian so I get plenty of soy and that did not work either.

Menopause, why us? I was so suprised to wake up one day and realize I was there. I am also fifty and when the hotflashes began I tried not to notice. I only took notice when I was not getting any sleep, and the anxiety was overwhelming. After some research into treatments that were helping other women who did not want to take hormone therapy I have found what seems to be my cure at present. I have been taking a mild antidepressent and anti-anxiety. The antidepressent I chose was Wellbutrin, very low side affects, sexual or otherwise, and 0.5 mg. of ativan. I am back to my old self. No anxiety, no hotflashes, sleep great. This does not mean I may not need some hormones later. I just wanted to try something else first. Plus I only take the ativan at night now. Hope this is helpful.
