  1. I emailed new nurse to ask her how her job was going. She emailed me back five words. "Drinking out of a firehose".

This person is 30 years younger than me and I take it she is under stress but I fear I may need a translator.

    Hi Oramar,

As NurseDennie said, it was a perfect choice of words. If you've ever watched the movie "UHF", there's a perfect visual to embed it into your brain. "Drinking from the firehose" is a way of describing an overwhelming experience. It is impossible to get a drink as you are being physically tossed to the otherside of the room from the blast of water. I hadn't heard the phrase until I watched "UHF", but it definitely means she was overloaded.

:kiss Thank you for explaining. I was afraid it had something to do with alcohol. I was worried. UHF, was that a Wierd Al movie? Was it totally panned and slammed by critics and now has a cult following? If it is then I vaguely remember liking it though I don't remember the firehose thing.

    Chuck -

I've seen UHF, but I don't remember anything about that. Wow - I should be the poster-girl for old-timer's disease. What the heck - I might already be!!!

I was going to tell Oramar to get the visual image of somebody drinking from a firehose, but your description was spot-on!

    LOL Heather!!

    NurseDennie,

Remember when Michael Richards (Kramer from Seinfeld) plays a character on a kiddie show. The little kid in the cowboy hat finds a marble in a wading pool full of oatmeal and gets to sit in a saddle and drink from the firehose. He is excited and gets hurled clear across the room. It is a strange show, but I've got to watch it every so often (even if poodles can't be taught to fly). I'm also an incurable Monty Python and Naked Gun fan.

Chuck - I'm a big Monty Python fan, as well. I thought Naked Gun was hilarious, but I'm not sure I could re-watch that over and over like I have done the MP bits!

My daughter is a major Weird Al fan - she has a copy of that movie, and I'll have to take a look at it again. It really had a cool cast, didn't it?

A friend of hubby's is moving and gave him some VCR's - and one of them is the first issue of Bertie and Wooster! I can't wait to see that again. I LOVE Wodehouse too!

    Hi NurseDennie,

I really like Wierd Al too. His talents at parody were just amazing. His songs (ever hear "Yoda"?) are brilliant. The "Conan the Librarian" skit was just hilarious too. Some days we just need mindless comedy.

Between the ages of 12 and 18 I had to listen to my son reinact The Holy Grail on a daily basis. I swear he had the whole thing memorized. It is not only one of the funniest movies ever made but is also one of the most intelligent.

    Hi Oramer,

He's a true Monty Python fan eh? The Holy Grail was probably their best show, but they all had their moments. The last time I went up to Minnesota to visit my old ER buddy, I took "Jabberwocky" along to watch. We used to have a movie day with a few of the ER nurses. The host got to pick the movie and we had pizza or subs and sodas. Those were some fun times. They've all either moved away or gotten married and don't have time anymore. Sad..... I really miss my old ER buddies.

Anyway, this is supposed to be an upbeat post. Curt and I need to watch "The Meaning of Life" the next time I go up to Elk River.
