"Counter-Inaugural" revving up

Dozens of groups converging on Washington for protests

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The committee handling Bush's Thursday inaugural is focused on pomp and pageantry, but protesters are also preparing.

Dozens of groups, from environmentalists to feminists to antiwar activists, are uniting for what they're calling "J20," or "The Counter-Inaugural."

"No one should underestimate the hatred that the world has for the Bush administration," said Bill Hackwell of ANSWER -- Act Now to Stop War and End Racism.

He explained the rationale behind staging protests by saying, "There are two superpowers in the world. One is the U.S. and the other is world opinion."

ANSWER has brought suit against the National Park Service in a case pending in U.S. District Court, claiming access to the inaugural parade route has been unreasonably restricted.

"Public space of the U.S. belongs to the people of the United States. The U.S. government only acts as a steward in terms of that space. They can't take space and determine that it's privatized," ANSWER attorney Mara Verheyden-Hilliard insisted.

"They can't take it and make viewpoint-based, content-based determinations and say that if you have a viewpoint that's in opposition to the government, you don't have a right to be here. It's completely illegal; it's unconstitutional."

Inaugural committee spokesman Kevin Sheridan downplayed the suit and any concerns about disruptions during inaugural events.

"The inaugural will celebrate all of our freedoms as Americans, First Amendment rights included," he said.

The U.S. Park Police claim they are ready for all contingencies. "If there is civil disobedience, and violent civil disobedience, then we are prepared to make arrests and mass arrests if needed." Sgt. Scott Fear told CNN.

Not all the demonstrations planned for Thursday will protest the president.

The D.C. Chapter of Free Republic has secured permits to offer what it is calling safe-haven zones near Pennsylvania Avenue, "to differentiate [it] from the anti-American, leftist protesters who will be scattered along the parade route."

The print is so tiny I can hardly read it--hurts my eyes. I must be getting old. But I get the gist.

    Is anyone surprised?

The Right need not worry, however. The protestors will be WELL quarantined and out of sight of the public and TV/media as possible! Bush and Co. have seen to that detail very thoroughly.

You got that right! I'm going to give it my best shot anyway. My friends and I are planning to attend the Counterinaugural March and rally here in Atlanta and I expect it to be a lot of fun. It's more fun than griping about the inauguration and feels better too.

Sorry, must be that I had it on the smallest size font.

Anyway, hope the protesters @ DC will have a great time at their Bush bashing party. God knows they need to vent.

Well, maybe they shouldn't be spending so much money on their little vent and use it to help the homeless or for armor for Humvees or . .. . oh, nevermind. What was I thinking - see what happens when you've been awake for almost 24 hours and had 3 hours sleep.

As compared to what the politicians are spending on the inauguration?

Forget Humvees - most grunts would feel happy with a "camelback" in that dry, desert heat ::

    Project Camelback

A group of mothers of USMC have been raising money since Sept 19th to purchase state of the art Camelbacks for the 31st MEU and 1/3 Battalion currently in the Mid East...
To date we have raised over $64000.00 and our goal is $100000.00 (cost is about $50/camelback for 2000 guys)

Which politician - liberal or conservative - has truly ever cared for the "boots on the ground" ? You think the currect administration is showing it's support - by slashing VA funds? Just as the previous DNC admin. cut MIL spending?

Nobody is guiltfree here. Govts. have rarely bothered about the troops. It's no big secret.

I see there will be protestors at this historic event.. more power to them but I don't think they will overshadow this huge historic event.

True true true. Past admins are equally guilty in other ways. However,* now we are at war*. Would seem to me, we would keep military matters at the forefront and at least put on a show a of treating them well! Such as ARMING them properly for the MISSION AT HAND! Not dismissing their concerns with stupid comments like "you go to war with the Army you have" from our own D. Rumsfeld. I could go on and on, but won't. I am disgusted, as you know. Simple as that.
