I have to put this somewhere, and where better than AN. So one of the reasons I like to hang on AN is the level of responsibility most of us feel to each other. Yes there are definitely those who will rip down a new grad or... Read More

I am surprised that people on facebook (which has your name, info, profile picture) are offering medical advise over the internet. If anything were to happen, that person could be liable. How dumb as these people? Lol! People go on there and ask question until they get the right answer. Freedom of speech can be freedom to be stupid.

Kinda like some of the threads here. Keep asking until you get validation! Or stage a dramatic flounce when they don't like what they hear/read.

Unfortunately, people have the right to remain ignorant. Even when you do patient teaching, some will just write you off because you're "part of the system." I'm all for alternative treatments if it makes you happy and it doesn't harm you, but ahhhhh -- where do some of these people get these ideas?

As someone who watched a friend's husband and father of nine die of lung cancer - after using 'square wave therapy' - this topic hits home. I never cease to be amazed at the people who will not have anything to do with 'modern medicine' because of some conspiracy theory. But boy howdy, break their leg and where do they come for help?

Yeah I have actually been communicating with the one gal who runs one of them, the other (the lactation group) I just hid from my timeline. In reference to the pregnancy one I told her to be careful about medical advice issues. She has put a disclaimer on her page, but people still go crazy asking. I am learning to accept that there are just only so many things you can control, and most of the crap on FB are not those things. Back to posting cute pictures of my Emma for my parents up north!

This is very true and something I need to learn to accept. Everyday it gets easier, but some days it just makes me want to scream.

I very briefly spent time on a pregnancy board (not Facebook) and couldn't believe the bullpuckey that was being bandied about. One woman spent all her time telling others which hospital they should try to deliver in stating falsely "they have the best pediatrics" (in reality this hospital has no pediatrics department). So, turns out sister was a primip in her second trimester putting the fear of god into women who were close to delivering that the hospital they had chosen was run by a bunch of unqualified apes and they may as well just pop their babe out in an alley for all the care they will get. One quote " I don't know about you but I want to give my baby the very best chance." Where did she acquire said knowledge? Well, all her friends have babies and they all delivered at hospital X, and they all said hospital X is the best, plus it's in a much nicer part of town than hospital Y (true).

So enter me, an ER nurse who has worked at both hospitals, knows the OBs and many lovely NICU and Peds nurses, delivered my daughter at that god- awful hospital Y oft referred to in the thread and managed to have an excellent experience and a healthy babe. I thought maybe I could contribute something positive to the discussion so I gently corrected the poster in regards to what departments are where in my city, and shared my own positive experience as a mom and a RN in our city with both hospitals.

I guess it's not hard to guess the reaction that got. I was shouted down and told my opinion wasn't wanted, that I obviously just wanted to defend the place I worked. This woman KNEW THE TRUTH and I was spitting in the wind, needless to say I never went back.

So yeah, AN looks pretty good by comparison!

I have been in the online arena for a very long time and I remember those first experiences with being whip-lashed over information. AN actually taught me a lot about being supportive, positive, and backing my comments up with evidence.

It's funny too, when I posted this rant this morning I set myself up, and am still waiting, for someone to come in flying about how stupid FB is, how they never use it, and how nurses put themselves in jeopardy over it all the time. In fact I almost considered not putting the words "Facebook" in the title just to avoid the usual ravenous posters on the subject lol.
