Advice for Dating a Nurse?

  1. 2 Hi everyone, this site is a great resource. With all the nurses here, I hope you can answer some of my questions! I've recently met a wonderful woman who is a nurse. We're both in our mid 20s and single; I work in software and I'm relatively successful, we have mutual friends and a lot in common, so I think things could really work out.

I want to know if there's any good general advice when dating a nurse. I've dated different women but some of my nurse friends have said dating a nurse, and eventually marrying a nurse, are different. I'm trying to figure out what that means I should be prepared for, and if I'm thinking straight.

Basically, I want to show her my support, encourage her, and listen to her after her good and bad days. I want to be the strong man who's there for her and willing weather the storms, to put up with the wierd hours and wierd stories, and everything else. In all of this, I guess I'm asking two questions:

What general qualities would a nurse's ideal man possess?
What should I expect, and what am I getting into?

Thanks so much and I just wanted to say that you guys are appreciated for the jobs that you do.

Wow.. you sound like a nice guy! Mainly just be there and listen to her. Nursing is so different from any other job. It is mentally and physically exhausting. Just be there and listen to her. She'll have bad days and all she will really need is for someone to listen to her and tell her that you are sorry she had a bad day... tomorrow will be better.. ect...

And working 12 hours is very hard. So don't expect her to cook you dinner when she gets home from a 12... 13.. or what has turned into a 14 hour day!!! haha

Do you have a gay brother that feels the same way? LOL

Basically the above is all you have to do.

Also foot and back rubs at the end of the day would be nice.

I'm not sure the hours she works, but prepare to spend some weekends, nights, and holidays alone without whining and complaining about it. It's just comes with it.

You truly do sound like a good guy and I wish you both the best of luck.

    I agree w/ tigergayle.
Don't expect too much from us after working 3 12's in a row because we are completly exhausted. Their will be no house cleaning, laundry, clean dishes, bathing the children, or much cooking going on until at least day 3 if we even get that long off between shifts. It's a physically and emotionally draining job so be empathetic. Listening is a definate plus because some days you just need to vent and you need to hear that it's okay and I'm sorry it was a tough day.
Sounds like she's got herself a good guy. Good luck to you!

Well, my husband and dad say the biggest problem is that you have to be very confident when you are married to a woman that handles more penises than a hooker

The above is true though. After a few 12 hour shifts, she might need a little space. She will have days when she needs a shoulder to cry on, or a kind ear to listen. It is a very stressful and draining job. Sometimes it takes a lot out of us, doesn't leave much of us left for those we love. Be there for us, because for most of us, it also makes us a better person.

Just by being on here and asking us and by reading your post - you truly seem to be a very nice, supportive man. I'm sure if you continue to be yourself, then everything will be fine.

So sweet!!! It is difficult for a nurse with a rotating schedule (nights to days...back the next week etc.) to date...and of course, the hospital never closes =). Just be there to support during the rough times at work, plan on doing things at times where it may not be normal to you (3 am at Village Inn...LOL)...it can be rough on a nurse to date...but you sound very supportive and willing to work with it. Go you

oh and dont forget that you also have to be supportive when she decides to go into work extra to dig her coworkes out of jam. my husband knows better than to expect me to cook, clean or do anything else while working my 12's. and if she works nights she will probably live in another world - cant do anything before noon, eats at 1am, etc. and have a happy valentines day!

Be willing to help out with domestic responsibilities without being "asked" or told. Just do stuff that needs to be done.

Did anyone mention, you need to have a strong sense of humor? Or did I mean a warped sense of humor? I have always said I have seen more naked butts than a hooker

Seriously, you sound like a sweet guy. My husband is also one of the men who have found being married to a nurse isn't always easy. I sleep until 11 at the earliest most days. (I work 4p-12:30am, plus whatever needed to get caught up.) I don't work 12's because I can't function, but when I did, I worked, slept and ate. NOTHING got done around the house during that time, until I had a day or two to get caught up on my sleep. Just try to be understanding of that. Good luck to you both.
