"Fifty Shades"

  1. 1 Anyone out there reading this trilogy? The first one is "Fifty Shades of Grey". It has gotten mixed press - is it demeaning to women or just hot fantasy erotica?

I personally enjoyed these books and found them , well, stimulating!

This is such a coincidence....I was just looking at the Trilogy on line and thinking of downloading.....

I am a voracious reader and ususally like thrillers/spy stuff/Legal thrillers/mysterys...Stephen King...but I love anything that has sequels...think The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo....which I couldn't put down untill all 3 were read..and even the Hunger Games....(read all 3 in one weekend)

and of course...all of the Harry Ps....I have read them twice....and I am loathe to admit it but ....*whispers here*....I even read the stupid vampire books....you know, the ones that begin with "T".......

So, when I saw the Grey books, I thought, Hmmmmmm, but haven't jumped yet....I wasn't so sure about it being more of a romance type thing....which I ususally avoid like the plague...

I think I may dip a toe into the water and see where it goes....

I read the trilogy, and at first thought they were demeaning to women, but found the main character growing and changing as the series went on. They're entertaining, and well....stimulating . They're good escapist fun (but not good clean fun!!!)

I've read the first two, I can't wait to read Fifty Shades Freed. Sometimes I just skip over the um...raunchy parts, lol. The plot is very interesting in my opinion.

    It's mommy porn. Not interested.

Read many reviews and the concensus is "appallingly atrocious writing", "oh and the repetition, the repetition, the repetition...and the repetition...and the repetition. I'm convinced the author has a computer macro that she hits to insert one of her limited repertoire of facial expressions whenever she needs one. According to my Kindle search function, characters roll their eyes 41 times, Ana bites her lip 35 times, Christian's lips "quirk up" 16 times, Christian "cocks his head to one side" 17 times, characters "purse" their lips 15 times, and characters raise their eyebrows a whopping 50 times. Add to that 80 references to Ana's anthropomorphic "subconscious" (which also rolls its eyes and purses its lips, by the way), 58 references to Ana's "inner goddess," and 92 repetitions of Ana saying some form of "oh crap" (which, depending on the severity of the circumstances, can be intensified to "holy crap," "double crap," or the ultimate "triple crap"). And this is only part one of a trilogy", UPDATE*: Thanks to the many other perturbed readers who have shared their own choices of the most annoyingly overused phrases in this masterpiece. Following up on their suggestions with my ever-useful Kindle search function, I have discovered that Ana says "Jeez" 81 times and "oh my" 72 times. She "blushes" or "flushes" 125 times, including 13 that are "scarlet," 6 that are "crimson," and one that is "stars and stripes red." (I can't even imagine.) Ana "peeks up" at Christian 13 times, and there are 9 references to Christian's "hooded eyes," 7 to his "long index finger," and 25 to how "hot" he is (including four recurrences of the epic declarative sentence "He's so freaking hot."). Christian's "mouth presses into a hard line" 10 times. Characters "murmur" 199 times, "mutter" 49 times, and "whisper" 195 times (doesn't anyone just talk?), "clamber" on/in/out of things 21 times, and "smirk" 34 times. Christian and Ana also "gasp" 46 times and experience 18 "breath hitches," suggesting a need for prompt intervention by paramedics. Finally, in a remarkable bit of symmetry, our hero and heroine exchange 124 "grins" and 124 "frowns"... which, by the way, seems an awful lot of frowning for a woman who experiences "intense," "body-shattering," "delicious," "violent," "all-consuming," "turbulent," "agonizing" and "exhausting" orgasms on just about every page.. . . . ." (from Amazon).

I'll just link this one - I'm a member of GoodReads . . . . beware, bad language alert but funny, especially about Christian.

So yes, demeaning to women and terrible writing. Mommy porn.

Curious ... the reviews which trash the (admittedly, underwhelming) writing also, without fail, use the derisive term "mommy porn". What's that about? Does it have to be daddy porn to be good? Very curious indeed.

No, I think this kind of stuff - reading - is what turns women on. Men are visually-oriented when it comes to sex so they like the photo spreads.

    Of course I'm generalizing here.

No one says "daddy porn" is better. Just different.

Someone told me about this book and recommended it to me when it first came out. I had no idea what it was about. I read the first few pages and then threw it straight in the trashcan. If I wouldn't watch it on TV, I'm not going to read it. What will I gain from reading it anyway. I believe:
"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!"
    Matt 6:22-23

If you like it then you like it, but this was my honest opinion.

I read the 1st one, it was good at first, but became a bit monotonous after a while. I became a bit bored with it.

However, that Jamie Dornan they have playing Mr Grey should be anything but boring!

That amazon review is hilarious. Absolutely awful writing, and to make matters worse, it was originally written as Twilight fanfiction on fanfiction.net. If you read it, see if you can find the parallels between the characters and other bits of the story.

Also, "mommy porn" (as derogatory as that term is) is typically erotic literature or movies that are popular and available in stores, are marketed toward women, and are marked as mature or adult. Apparently women are less likely to enjoy or want to consume the more "mainstream pornography" that is typically marketed toward male audiences.
