AARP - Requesting Membership from Me. . . AGAIN! - page 2

O. K. I honestly don't think of myself as a candidate for AARP. To my eyes, AARP is only for people well into their 90s. But alas, I guess I meet their minimal age criteria: over 50. They've sent... Read More

LOL! I forgot you live in the land of the "Gray Hairs", Tweety!

Amy and I were discussing retirement. In fact, earlier today, she was asking if I was going to join AARP. LOL! Sadly, retirement seems to be more in the "distant" future for me. 17 more years seems about right. Unfortunately, we have so much debt that I can't see myself retiring too much earlier. UGH! So, we're looking for ways to save some cash, especially as we continue to pursue our interests. Traveling is one of them. Because Amy and I do a fair amount of traveling during our vacations (part of the reason we're in so much debt), I was hoping to find out if AARP offers worthwhile travel and lodging discounts.

I wasn't anticipating a discussion on politics, though. HA!

Oh yea. . . Amy wants to travel to Italy for her 50th Birthday, next year! Does AARP offer any kind of worthwhile international travel discounts plans???? (Looks like I'll be retiring around the age of 80!! LOL!)

I can remember hearing about the AARP and its left leaning ideas long before the Tea Party surfaced.

I'm glad that you hold such recollections, tntrn. (Tweety, thanks a lot about bringing in the Tea Party into the discussion! )

tntrn. . . Tweety. . . ANYONE. . . Does AARP/AMAC (dare I put those eight letters together?? ) offer good/worthwhile discounts for international travels/lodgings?? My loving wife wants to travel to Italy next year.

I don't know about international discounts. In our Motorhome travels, however, the AAA discounts aren't much.....10%, and often you will get those just by showing up, no membership or card necessary.

AMAC has a buyer reward program, though, where whenever and wherever you shop, there are cash rewards based on how much you spend. You should check it out

tntrn - AAA doesn't seem to offer much in the way of travel/lodging discounts. Been using AAA for years and have found they're best used for the occasional flat tire and towing issues. LOL! Regarding AMAC, of course I'll check it out.

Amy and I have toyed around with the idea of renting a Motorhome for one of our travel-vacations. It's not a cheap vacation. But, it would be a nice way to check out the many cool vacation spots that our country has to offer. Italy must come first, though. (Amy's words, not mine! LOL!)

Well I meant AARP. Not AAA. Their rv park discounts are 10% max.I am working on Italy, too. We have a young pilot friend who is like one of ours who is italian and we are hoping to go see him at some point. I am reluctant to leave the US while my dad is in his health care pickle ( he is holding his own and generally feeling "okay"). But I have Italy on my mind.

tntrn - Going to Italy for us has been a dream of sorts for a few years. Around that time, we were asked to go to Italy with some friends who rented a house there. All we had to pay for was the air-fare to Italy and back. Unfortunately we couldn't go because of work schedules, and (quite frankly) my mother was in the middle of her first 6-month course of treatments for her cancer. Going to Italy NEXT YEAR may be a goal for us, but there are a whole lot of unknowns, in particular, my mother's health, that would be reason enough to postpone that trip. Still, we plan. We have to plan, at least financially. We're both working overtime, a little here and a little there, and saving that extra money for "The Trip". Amy and I love to travel and Italy is on Amy's wish list for her Birthday. We hope to be going with the couple that invited us to go with them 3+ years ago. Without a doubt, though, those very important "unknowns" could keep us in the States for another year or so. It's good to read that your father is "holding his own and generally feeling o.k.". Will hold him, you and family in our thoughts and prayers.

Well. . . here's to vacations, dreaming of future travel plans and parents. . . .

    Peace, tntrn.

Did not join the AARP because they supported the PPACA in which 500 BILLION dollars is about to be gutted from Medicare. Not a PEEP out of the AARP about this matter, only their support. Can't for the life of me wrap my mind around this???? When they send me their trial memberships cards, I cut them in half (as Senator McCain suggested in his now famous YouTube video about the AARP) and send it back to them in their prepaid postage envelope. Come to think of it, haven't received any offers from them in awhile. Wonder why????!!!!

Anyhooooo, on a much more positive note, I hope you and Amy get to realize your dream of a wonderful vacation in Italy.

Here are some pictures from Italy. Looks like a fantastic place to visit!

That it is, Ted! France isn't that far from Italy - why not make a slight detour to see La Tour Eiffel?

Sounds like a wonderful plan, VickyRN! If possible, it would be mighty cool to visit as much as Europe as time and finances would allow. Lots to think about . . . lots to plan. . . LOTS AND LOTS of money to save! LOL!
